It gets worse with a blunt blade. A dull edge doesn't glide through fabric, it drags, and the only way to compensate is to press harder. Titanium-coated blades have a harder edge than plain steel, so they hold that edge for longer, particularly through denim, several layers of fabric, or anything with a bit of resistance. Plain SKS-7 steel blades are just as sharp when fresh, and for quilting cotton, as opposed to denim, leather or thick multi-layer stacks, they'll get you a long way before that difference shows up. Rotary cutter vs scissors for arthritic hands: which is genuinely easier?
For most people with arthritis, a rotary cutter comes out ahead, but it's worth understanding why, because it isn't effortless either.
Scissors need a repeated open-close squeeze: pinch, release, pinch, release, dozens of times down a single seam, with the load landing on the same finger and thumb joints every time. A rotary cutter swaps that for one continuous rolling push along a ruler, using your forearm and body weight rather than a squeezing grip. It also cuts several layers in a single pass, which means fewer total cutting motions for the same amount of fabric: four strips cut once instead of one strip cut four times.
What it doesn't remove is the need to hold a ruler steady with your other hand, which is its own sustained grip. For some people that's an easier trade than repeated scissor squeezes; for others, especially if the non-dominant hand is more affected, it isn't. If you can, try both before you commit. A rotary cutter is the better bet for most quilters with sore hands, but "most" isn't "everyone."
Tips for reducing strain while cutting
A few habits make more difference than any single piece of kit:
- Cut standing up, not sitting down. Standing lets you put your body weight over the blade instead of pushing from the wrist, which is exactly the motion that flares up sore joints.
- Set your mat at a height where your elbow sits roughly level with the cutting surface. Too low and you're hunching and pressing at an angle; too high and you lose the ability to use your weight.
- Let the ruler take the pressure, not your grip. Rest your hand's weight on the ruler rather than clamping down on it. A ruler with a raised edge or a rubberised back helps too.
- Split big cutting jobs into shorter sessions. Squaring up an entire quilt top's worth of strips in one sitting is exactly the repetition that tends to cause trouble.
- Change the blade before it's obviously blunt. A fresh blade needs less force than a tired one, every time.
Is a bigger or smaller blade easier on the hands?
It's a genuine trade-off rather than a straightforward answer. A smaller blade, 18mm or 28mm, which some other brands sell alongside 45mm, needs less force to push through fabric because there's less blade in contact with the material at any moment. That makes it easier on a single stroke, but it's built for tight curves and detail work rather than long straight cuts, so you end up making more passes to cover the same ground.

For most quilting (cutting binding strips, borders, and straight seams) that usually means fewer total cutting motions across a project, even if any one motion asks slightly more of your hand. Are there adaptive or loop-grip handles available for rotary cutters? Yes, from some specialist brands. Loop-handle and pistol-grip designs exist specifically to reduce pinch-grip strain, and they're worth searching out if a straight handle doesn't work for you.
