Are cheap rotary cutter blades worth it?

What actually makes a "cheap" rotary blade cheap — and where do the savings come from?
Three things, usually in combination. First, the steel itself: a lower-grade, softer steel is cheaper to produce than a proper tool steel, and it dulls faster under the same use. Second, quality control: testing every single blade for centre-hole tolerance and edge consistency takes time and staff, so a lot of ultra-cheap listings skip individual inspection in favour of sampling a percentage of each batch. Third, packaging: no storage case, no printed safety insert, no retail box, just blades in a bag. That's fine for the blade itself but means you're storing loose sharp metal with nothing protecting the edge or your fingers.

Are cheap or no-name rotary blades safe to use on fabric?
Sharpness itself isn't the safety variable. Every rotary blade, cheap or expensive, is sharp enough to need the same handling: keep the guard closed when it's not cutting, change blades away from the edge of a table, and dispose of old ones by wrapping them or putting them straight into a case rather than a bin. The real risk with unbranded blades is fit and consistency, not the edge itself. A centre hole cut slightly off-tolerance can make the blade sit unevenly on the shaft, which causes wobble rather than a clean rotation, and that's more likely to catch or slip than a blade that seats properly. Signs a "bargain" blade is a false economy
A blade that costs less but needs replacing three times as often isn't actually cheaper: it's just failing in smaller, more frequent instalments. Watch for these on a new pack, especially an unfamiliar or unbranded one:
- Snagging. The blade pulls threads instead of slicing through them cleanly, leaving little tufts along the cut edge.

What that means for the value question: a blade that costs 20% more but lasts 50% longer is a clear win.
